Every boxer will have his own style but keep these things in mind as you train:
1. Keep your hands up at all times and your chin tucked in behind your gloves.
2. Throw your punches straight, don't loop or throw roundhouse punches.
3. Pace yourself for the whole round, don't shoot your wad in the first 30 seconds.
4. If you get a standing 8 count, it means you took a shot and the ref wants to see if your ok to continue... at the end of the 8 count he may ask you a question (like, do you want to continue fighting), pay attention to what he says, look him in the eye and answer the question with confidence, if you are not paying attention to the ref he can stop the fight.
5. Follow the refs instructions AT ALL TIMES.
6. Cardio is VERY improtant, run at least 8 miles a week.
7. Drink lots of water the week leading up to the tourney... it is very easy to become dehydrated during and after the fight..... lots of water!

Some Gym Info and things to know
Golden Gloves is open from Monday thru thursday from 6:30pm to 9pm. Tuesdays are designated for Fraternity boxers although you can train any of the four nights. You will need to purchase a set of hand wraps and a mouthpiece. Sign in on the Fraternity boxing sheet when you enter before you start training. You can ask any trainer for assistance with your workout. The trainers will be wearing special Fraternity boxing shirts so you will know who they are. I would suggest running on your own time and using the gym hours to hone your boxing skills and conditioning your mid-section. Try to get in the gym no later than the end of january to get at least a solid month on training. The sooner the better. If you have any questions about the tourney, just leave a comment and someone will get back to you. Have Fun!
